Imperial Festival May 2017
On Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th May 2017, the Elite Scientists went to present their project: Shooting Stars on Camera: Colour and Contrast, at the Imperial Festival 2017.
The students talked to the general public all day and relayed their findings to them. They answered their questions and got them to partake in hands-on activities, such as looking at constellations in a box, finding meteorites in the sand, and guessing the constellation via a game made by Ellie in Year 7.
Everyone who came on the stall looked like they were having fun, and the students were rated for their communication out of five, by each visitor. In total the Elite Scientists collectively talked with about 600 people of all ages! As well as working on the stand, the students spent half of their time going round the other exhibits learning about all the wonderful cutting edge science and engineering going on at Imperial College.
There was lots of entertainment, including dance shows, lectures and various music bands. This kind of experience is so valuable for our students as it teaches them communication skills and helps them build their confidence in talking with members of the public. These skills will help the students when they go for job and university interviews in the future.
Well done Elite Scientists! And thank you to the teachers who gave up their time to man the stand, so I could have a break: Mrs Taccuso, Mrs Hamid, Ms Cooper, Mr Ratcliffe, Ms Patterson, Ms Abelard, and Mrs Pan-Latimar.
P.S. Thank you to Yusuf Rashid, Retro Elite scientist, for helping us 2nd year running, as we needed extra helpers on Sunday.
