Head Teachers Letter - Christmas 2015
Merry Christmas from William Perkin
Thursday 17th December 2015
Dear William Perkin Parents and Carers,
As we reach the final day of term and celebrate our many successes, I am filled with pride at our shared achievement.
Over the summer we were thrilled to appoint outstanding leading teachers in Art, Music, Sport, and ICT and it has been a joy to witness the impact that they have made on our school community. We have enjoyed numerous sporting successes and the musical life of the school builds and builds culminating in our wonderful Christmas Concert. In addition, the introduction of GCSE preparation courses in Art and Computing have enriched our curriculum offer tremendously.
This term we were also privileged to host a Ministerial Visit when Lord Nash, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools, joined us on the 3rd December. In his letter of thanks, he commented that he “was most impressed with everything” he saw and that “William Perkin is clearly a truly outstanding free school”. These comments, on the back of our magnificent Ofsted report, affirm what a wonderful school community we have created.
Other events that are worth celebrating are the successful Kelvin and Pascal House Enterprise days where students raised large amounts of money for Cancer Research UK and Macmillan respectively; the spelling Bee and a variety of inter-house competitions, including our first ever inter-house music competition. The Science Department has had some big successes this year – they have been awarded a prestigious Royal Society Partnership Grant of £3,000 for 25 students to work alongside Professor Monica Grady, of The Open University, Planetary and Space Science Dept. The grant has funded workshops and trips related to Stars and Meteor Showers – although the cloudy weather hasn’t helped! Furthermore, William Perkin is now an Associate School of The Royal Society, which means we will be able to share experiences and knowledge in order to promote excellence in Science and Mathematics.
Most importantly, our students are happy at school and able to accept all the challenges that we place before them. They arrive on time, fully prepared with smiles on their faces and are positive and unfailingly polite. We asked them to commit to a full Exam week which they have taken in their stride and achieved outstanding results - in fact, they are the best results yet! They are wonderful ambassadors for us and we thank you as parents and carers for the values you have instilled in them and the support and trust you give us.
As festive music plays in our normally silent corridors, we now look forward to resting and enjoying the festive period with our families, recharging our batteries and moving forward with a sense of purpose, and a smile, into 2016.
May I, on behalf of all the staff here, wish you and your families a Happy and safe Christmas season.
Mr Keir Smith
