On Tuesday 31st of January, the Elite Scientists 8.0, were in for a big treat! Four scientists from University College, London, came to give talks and workshops on the brain:
Dr. Iryna Benilov.
Dr Silvia Purro,
PhD candidates
Lizzie Hill and
Catherine Turnbull
So much wonderful information was given, and the students really enjoyed what the scientists had to say. Such a privilege for William Perkin students to have so many real scientists come at once to share in the riches of brain research.
They learned about all sorts of things, such as the life of a PhD student, helping students to aspire to a career in science, as well as learning the Lobe song!:
THE LOBE SONG
Frontal Lobe it helps you think, you can talk in just a blink.
Parietal Lobe, it helps you touch, just be sure you don’t touch too much!
Temporal Lobe is next, just listen to my text.
Temporal Lobe helps you hear, you can hear from far or near.
Occipital Lobe is last; it helps you see things that are vast.
You use your lobes everyday, they help you think, see, hear, and say
They also, found out that there are as many neurons in the brain, as there are stars in the Milky Way! Approximately 100 billion! Additionally, the students found out how the masses of brains vary from species to species, and learned how the neurons are connected together. One of the presentations talked about Alzheimer's disease, and how we could look after our brains:
Three simple rules for looking after your brain
1. Love your heart
2. Stay sharp
3. Stay connected
Great advice. I think this session exercised our minds well. We look forward to all of these lovely scientists coming back in the summer to give part two (even more visits in the future hopefully!). Thank you to all of you for your time and effort. We really appreciate everything you've given us, especially the making the brain part!
Thank you to:
